Frequently Asked Questions

How are the photobooks published?

Once the text for your book is written and your photographs ready on a computer disk, we will use a professional photobook site to create and print the actual book.  Many such sites exist:  mypublisher.com and Snapfish.com, to name a few.  We'll choose the site that best suits your design preferences, and create the book on that site.  You will then order your printed copies of the book through that site.

How much does a photobook cost?

I charge according to the services that you contract with me to perform.  An estimate will be written at your free consultation.  You will pay me for my work in creating the book, half up front, half once you have approved the electronic version of your completed photobook.  Actual copies of the book can then be purchased directly from the publishing company.  Prices per printed book vary according to the number of pages, the binding features you choose, and the number of books you purchase.  I advise customers to look at various photobook sites to compare and contrast prices and design options.

How does a collaborative project work?

I work with my customers to help them to determine what they would like me to do, and what parts of the book they wish to do themselves.  By working together, we can ensure that the book comes out exactly how you want it, and that you are paying only for the services that you wish to purchase.

First, we decide the subject and scope of the book.  Next, the interviews are conducted, and photos and documents are gathered.  Printed photos and documents are scanned, and all of the images that you want in your book are put on one cd, for uploading to the publishing site.  Then, the text of the book is written.  Once the text and images are ready, they are uploaded to a publishing site, and your book is created in electronic format.  You will then view the book page by page electronically.  Our collaborative project is complete when the electronic version of your book is exactly as you want it.

What if I'd like to write or design my own photobook - can you help?

Yes!  I do workshops to teach people to write and create their own photobooks, and am also availabe for one-on-one consultation and support.  As each book is a collaborative effort, I tailor what I do to your individual needs.  You can do your own interviewing and writing, then hire me to design the book electronically; or, you could hire me to interview and write, then create your own book online.

How long does it take to complete a photobook?
A photobook's completion time depends on the scope of the book's content, the interviewees' availability, and on my own availability.  I have done a book in one day; other books need a few months from start to completion.  If you wish to create a  photobook as a gift for a certain occasion or holiday, it is best to plan ahead as much as possible.  Once the book is created, it takes a week or two for the printing and shipping, faster if you pay for overnight shipping.

How can I be sure that I'll be satisfied with my photobook?

The best assurance of your satisfaction is our ongoing communication and collaboration as the book develops.  You will have the opportunity to review the book's text before the book is created online.  We'll insure that the story is just as you want it before we start to design the book.  Once the book is created online, you will review it electronically; we'll then make any design changes that you need.  Once you have approved the electronic copy of the book, your business will be with the site that is printing it.  Refer to the publishing site regarding their guarantee of print and binding quality.

What legal and payment terms apply?

One-half of the fee for the photobook is due in advance.  The initial payment is non-refundable.  The balance of the fee is due on your approval of the book in electronic format.  Photobooks will be commissioned by a written contract setting forth the fee and terms of payment.  The contractor will agree to complete the finished electronic version of the photobook within a reasonable time, and the patron will agree to render such reasonable cooperation as will enable the photobook to be timely completed by the contractor .  The patron will also agree to pay for the photobook upon completion of the writing and design services.  The patron may order printings of the book upon payment of the contractor's fee in full.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions that are not answered to your satisfaction on this page.
